AQUITAIN REGION

This is south western France, bordered on one side by the majestic sweep of the wild Atlantic and to the south by the Basque region and Spain. Here you have the mountains of the Pyrenees plus the Pyrenees National Parkland which includes the largest pine forest in Europe. Aquitaine is a land of contrasts which also boasts the stunning beauty of the Dordogne, fine farmland, valleys, lakes, waterfalls and along the coast many resorts and fine beaches.

Towns and Cities in Aquitaine

Bordeaux is the regional capital, alongside the river Garonne . Famous for its beautiful eighteenth century buildings and marvellous shopping and of course gives its name to the region’s most famous export, great wines. Other famous towns and cities include mediaeval Bayonne, Perigeaux and Lourdes near the Pyrenees, the place of pilgrimage for millions each year and Biarritz on the coast famous for its aura of bygone splendour and now for its inviting crashing waves.

Activities in Aquitaine

A multitude of choices awaits the visitor. There is trekking and hiking in summer and skiing in winter. Along the coast sailing, swimming and surfing, with fishing in the lakes and rivers. In addition walking, cycling and golf are popular options. For the less active along with the sightseeing already mentioned the region has many fine markets, jazz concerts and antique fairs.

Food and Drink

Celebrated for its goose and duck produce including Foi Gras and duck breasts also look for black truffles and in autumn many mushroom dishes. Bayonne ham and chocolate are delicious as are varieties of goat’s cheese and pastries and along the coast wonderful fish and shellfish, further south there is a Basque influence with Paella and incredible fish stews. To drink, of course Bordeaux but also Duras, Bergerac, Blizet and Monbazillac, not forgetting Armagnac Brandy.

Climate

Early springs with long hot summers and mild winters. Snow in the Pyrenees.
