Burgundy Region

Burgundy is situated in eastern central France, south east of Paris, it is an area rich in history and culture and justly famed for its many wonderful wines. A dukedom until the 18th century, there are an enormous amount of historical monuments to visit, many of them Romanesque. The region has a varied geography of parks, like the Morvan regional park, woodland and forests,  crossed by two important rivers the Saone and the Yonne, Burgundy also has its own navigable waterways such as the Burgundy Canal. There are many superb Abbeys to see including Cluny, Fontennay, Citeaux and Vezelay as well as the chateaux Ancy le France and Tanlay.

Towns and Cities

There is Dijon of course, famous for its mustard as well as Beaune where you can see ‘les hospices de Beaune’ a mediaeval hospital considered to be one of the most unusual buildings in France and also the lovely town of Avallon. Burgundy also has many picturesque villages such as Semur en Auxois and the beautiful Flavigny. For markets try Autan, Louhans and Chalon sur Saone.

Activities

There is much to do for everyone in Burgundy, apart as already mentioned from spectacular sightseeing, there are many opportunities for vineyard tours and wine tasting. There is also cycling with bike tours on offer and hot air ballooning for those with a head for heights. The rivers and canals provide many water sports such as fishing, sailing, canoeing and water skiing. Golf, horse riding, walking and go karting are other popular options.

An absolutely fabulous feast for the senses in Burgundy with local produce of Charolais beef, escargots, and a variety of mushrooms. World famous  dishes such as Bouef Bourgignon and Coq au Vin are regional specialities with local cheeses like Citeaux and Brillat Savarin. This can all be washed down with internationally acclaimed wines including Chablis, Beaune and Nuit St. George.
