CHAMPAGNE REGION

Situated in north eastern France and ninety miles east of Paris, Champagne, by its very name, immediately tells us the most important claim to fame of this interesting and varied region. Though mainly an agricultural area with numerous vineyards,  it is also crisscrossed by many rivers, the Seine, the Marne, the Aisne and the Meuse. The largest man- made lake in Europe Der Chantecoq is here and also many miles of canals. Where it borders Belgium Champagne contains part of the Ardennes with impressive forests, parks and valleys.

Towns and Cities

The beautiful cathedral at Reims is the site of the coronation of the kings of France. Every town and city is full of wonderful architecture ,such as the ancient houses at Troyes, the old ramparts and walls at Langres and the cloisters at the ancient regional capitol of Chalons en Champagne. Visit the caves at Epernay in the middle of the Champagne district , see Colombey or visit the impressive basilica at L’Epine, a stunning sight for many miles around.

Activities

There are Champagne routes to explore, with wine tasting and tours of the vineyards bookable. There are also 450 miles of navigable waterways as well as boating and other water based activities such as sail boarding. Hot air ballooning, golf, cycling, hiking and hunting may be to your taste or perhaps one of the many concerts, son et lumiere shows or the rock festival in October. There is something for everyone in Champagne.

Food and Drink

This region is known mainly for its hearty fare, some regional favourites include Andouillettes Troyes ( tripe sausages) and Potee Champenoise made with smoked ham, cabbage and sausage. Locally caught game and fish are also popular as are the many regional cheeses such as Chaource, Langres and Rocroi not to forget the local ham, Jambon des Ardennes. Obviously the drink to try is Champagne!

Climate

Champagne has an oceanic climate, variable with summers mainly warm and mostly dry with an average of 18 degrees in summer.
