FRANCHE COMTE REGION

This stunning and varied region is in eastern France where it borders Switzerland, sharing with its neighbour not only physical similarities but also similar culture, agriculture and cuisine. With the Vosges mountains in the south and the Jura in the north, dense pine forests, rolling cultivated fields, gorges, waterfalls and tiny villages, this is a destination for all seasons and every generation. Ski in winter, hike in summer, Franche Comte has the Doube and Loue Valley where timbered  houses perch on stilts in the river , the Region des Lacs, the most wooded region in France and incredible views from Haute Jura over Lake Geneva and the Alps.

Towns and Cities

From the regional capital Bescanon with its hilltop citadel to the old town of Belfort and its fortified castle, there is, as one might expect, beauty and history combined in Franche Comte. Visit Montbeliard, Dole , the spa town of Lons le Saunier and Arbois, the wine capital of the Jura where one can visit the house and laboratory of Louis Pasteur.

Activities

This is a region for the winter and summer tourist, skiing is plentiful with cross country skiing a speciality. Franche Comte has La Grand Traversee de Jura, a 350 km trail ideal for skiing in winter and for hiking and mountain biking in the summer. There are also nature trails, cycling, horseback riding  and swimming, something to suit every age and taste.

Food and Drink

The most famous produce is cheese such as Gruyere, Comte, Morbier, Mont d’Or, Bleu de Gex, Der Haut Jura, red label Emmental and Grand Cru. Also noted for its hams, sausages such as Sausisse de Morteau, wild mushrooms and rosti potatoes. To drink try Vin Jaune, Straw Wine, Chardonnay and Pinot Gris and Pinot Noir.  For something sweet, the area has wonderful honey and the Gallettes de Bescanon, delicious biscuits.
