Limousin Region Of France
Limousin is situated in the heartland of France 350 kilometers south of Paris. Crossed by many rivers; the Vienne, Dordogne, Cher and Creuse and with a very low population, this unspoiled region of France has a wonderfully tranquil landscape full of lakes, valleys, forests and mountains. Full of amazing architecture, picturesque villages, beautiful churches and magnificent chateaux, this peaceful area also can promise many activities to suit all the family.
Towns and Cities
The regional capital, the ancient city of Limoges with its superb cathedral is of course famous for its porcelain, but there is also Aubusson renowned for tapestries and Fresslines a centre for artists, including Monet, for many years. Also ancient Chalus where Richard the Lionheart was fatally wounded and the Chateau de Chalus where he is buried.
Activities in Limousin
Activities are many and varied, there is white water rafting, swimming, wind surfing, kayaking, fishing, walking, pony trekking, golf and nature walks. There are lakes with lifeguards and sandy beaches and also hot air ballooning, wildlife parks and steam trains. Something indeed for young and old alike.
Food and Drink
Wonderful beef cattle are a source of great pride in Limousin, so you can rely on a marvellous steak here. Mushrooms are also a speciality and the flavour of the region is for hearty dishes. Although this has not always been known as a wine growing region, this has changed considerably in recent years with white, red and rose all popular choices. Vin Paille and Verneuil Rose are particularly recommended.
Climate
Summers can exceed 32 degrees centigrade, long cold winters
with snow in high areas.
