LORRAINE REGION OF FRANCE
Situated in the north east, Lorraine is the only region of France bordered by three countries, Germany, Belgium and Luxembourg. Lorraine benefits from an attractive blend of French and German cultures as well as much beautiful scenery. Crossed by the rivers Moselle, Meuse and Meurthe with many streams, rivers and clear cold lakes, this region also has the verdant Vosges Mountains. This is also an area which contains much industry as well as being an important agricultural region.
TOWNS AND CITIES
There are two regional capitals, Metz and Nancy. Nancy, situated on the banks of the Meurthe is famous for its eighteenth century baroque architecture and beautiful Place Stanislas surrounded by five palaces. There are also many thermal spas including Vittel and Bains-les-Bains. Visit too, the battle fields at Verdun and the birthplaceof Joan of Arc at Donremy .
ACTIVITIES IN LORRAINE
A dizzying array of activities is available to every type of visitor. Winter sports of all kinds take place in the Vosges Mountains and there are many Christmas markets. In the summer there are a host of festivals to enjoy as well as more active pursuits. Water sports abound on the lakes and rivers which include fishing, sailing and boating and also cruises along the Marne Rhine canal. For those who like to shop, Lorraine is a centre of excellence for crystal and earthenware crafts.
FOOD AND DRINK
Particularly fine local products include potatoes, smoked ham, cheese and Mirabelle plums. Among delicious local dishes is the famous Quiche Lorraine made from ham, cheese, cream and eggs. Also try Pate Lorraine, made from pork, veal wine and puff pastry and Potee Lorraine, a stew of smoked meat, sausage, cabbage and root vegetables. To drink, the Pinot Noir is excellent and also Lorraine is justifiably proud of its very good beer.
