LOWER NORMANDY

Only a short trip across the Chanel yet close to Paris this beautiful region of France has convenient access for the traveller. With 600 kilometers of sea coast, golden sands, lovely family friendly seaside towns, Lower Normandy can offer the perfect summer break; yet it also has much more. There are forests, streams, rich pastures, meadows and orchards as well as picturesque villages and pretty harbours. This is a favourite destination for both young and old every year.

Towns and Cities

The regional capital of Lower Normandy is the lovely town of Cherbourg which gives immediate access to the Cherbourg peninsula with the famous family resorts of Deauville, Trouville and Cabourg. There is also the pretty harbour at Honfleur  and Bayeux for the historic tapestry of the battle of Hastings. Liseux has the Basilica of St. Theresa and the Gardens at Givernay are where Monet did some of his most iconic paintings. Finally don’t miss the magnificent Mont St Michel with its Romanesque architecture and fantastic views facing out over the Chanel.

Activities in Lower Normandy

Apart from the numerous water based activities such as swimming, boating, fishing and the more active water sports there is also walking, cycling and golf. A tour of the Cider Road and Cheese Road is a must for gourmets. For those more interested in recent history a visit to the beaches from the Normandy Landings would be of interest, for example it is possible to see Sword, Juno, Gold, Omaha and Utah and visit the local museums there.

Food and Drink

Superb local produce in this region includes fresh fish, shellfish, duck, lamb and fresh cream. The cheeses are wonderful, Camembert, Livarot, Pont Leveque and  Brillat Savarin are all justly famous. Local dishes of note are Sole Dieppe and Sauce Normandie. To drink there is Calvados of course as well as apple cider and Bon Bere.

Climate

Lower Normandy has a variable climate with cooler weather on the coast. The winters are cool and the spring and autumn temperatures are mild with 1,763 sunshine hours a year.
