NORTH CALAIS REGION
North Calais (Nord Pas de Calais) is the most northerly region of France, bordering the English Channel and to the east, Belgium. It is mostly flat with many lovely sandy beaches, areas of beauty and marshlands with many pretty villages. This area of France has a large population and is rich in industry, it also has a strong Flemish influence in food and architecture, having at one time been part of Flanders. This area is plentiful in character, activities and events which can be overlooked by those intent on passing through travelling to other destinations.
TOWNS AND CITIES
The regional capital is Lille, very popular for its famous flea markets and various seasonal markets held in the beautiful town square. Other towns include Calais. Boulogne, Arras and Saint Omer with their rich military history; also Lens and Douaii and the lovely seaside resorts of Le Touquet and CambraI.
ACTIVITIES
The wonderful Opal Coast offers many clean sandy beaches with all the water based activities you might expect, including fishing, kite surfing and land sailing. There are many fine art galleries , war museums, craft displays and festivals. There are among others, The Gathering of the Kites, The Carnival of the Giants and the world famous motorbike festival which is held annually at Le Touquet. North Calais offers fields, valleys, hedgerows and beautiful gardens and plenty of scope to indulge in cycling, walking and canal rides, in short something for everyone and for every age.
FOOD AND DRINK
This region has French, English and Flemish influences. Food is hearty and there are many excellent sea food dishes , especially worthy of a mention is the local red herring. Specialities of the area include Speculoos, which are thin almond biscuits, waffles, Maroilles cheese tart and Mimolette cheeses. Try Potjevleesch - a three meat terrine and for desert a delicious tart. To drink there are wonderful local beers and Genever gin.

North Calais has a moderate climate with an average winter temperature of 3.2 degrees and an
average summer temperature of 16.5 degrees.
