MIDI PYRENEES

This is the largest French region, located between the Atlantic and Mediterranean its natural mountain border separates France and Spain. The river Garonne rises in the Pyrenees and the Basque region crosses both France and Spain. Stunningly beautiful it is primarily a simple peasant region renowned for its folklore, folk theatre, music and dancing. Midi Pyrenees has a national park as well as three nature parks, limestone plateaux at Aubrac and the Causses mountains. It also has wonderful caves at Padirac and Ariege.

Towns and Cities

The regional capital is the city of Toulouse. There is Albi, the birth place of Toulouse Lautrec and Montauban hometown of Ingres. World famous Lourdes where  St.Bernadette is said to have seen apparitions of the Virgin Mary is here and also the landmark town of Lisl sur Tarn, a thirteenth century fortified town. The Midi Pyrenees has many local markets and crafts and also popular agricultural fairs.

Activities

Many winter sports take place here  and also a proliferation of summer sports and activities. There are many water sports including fishing and also such diverse occupations as rock climbing, caving, mountain biking, horse riding, hot air ballooning and hang gliding.

Food and Drink

A marvellous area for food, the home of Roquefort cheese with also Foie Gras and Truffles. The dishes include Cassoulet, Aligot - mashed potatoes and cheese  as well as great fish Quercy lamb and for desert why not try Gateau a la Broche - spit roasted cake? Midi Pyrenees has a vast range of wines but don’t forget the magnificent Armignac native to this region.

Climate

The Midi Pyrenees has long cold winters and very hot summers . The average in summer is around 24 to 25 degrees and it is said to be the sunniest region in France with an average 2000 hours of sunshine per year.
