Situated in the North East and the smallest of the French regions, this varied and fascinating area not only has a flavour of both France and Germany, having shifted between the two for many years, but also has something for every season both winter and summer. Alsace has a wealth of notable features for the holiday maker ranging from beautiful scenery which ranges from the pastoral to the rugged to the many activities available for the more active visitor. This is south western France, bordered on one side by the majestic sweep of the wild Atlantic and to the south by the Basque region and Spain. Here you have the mountains of the Pyrenees plus the Pyrenees National Parkland which includes the largest pine forest in Europe. Aquitaine is a land of contrasts which also boasts the stunning beauty of the Dordogne, fine farmland, valleys, lakes, waterfalls and along the coast many resorts and fine beaches. The Auvergne is situated in central France at the heart of the Massif Central. It is about three hours south of Paris and two hours from Lyon. The least populated part of France, it is famous for its wide open spaces containing lakes and forests and the largest group of volcanoes in Europe. This area includes over five hundred Romanesque churches and fifty chateaux. In addition it boasts its famous mineral waters, spas and hot springs.
Situated in North West France, Brittany is very proud of it’s distinctive Celtic culture which includes it’s own language. Burgundy is situated in eastern central France, south east of Paris, it is an area rich in history and culture and justly famed for its many wonderful wines. A dukedom until the 18th century, there are an enormous amount of historical monuments to visit, many of them Romanesque. The region has a varied geography of parks, like the Morvan regional park, woodland and forests, crossed by two important rivers the Saone and the Yonne, Burgundy also has its own navigable waterways such as the Burgundy Canal. There are many superb Abbeys to see including Cluny, Fontennay, Citeaux and Vezelay as well as the chateaux Ancy le France and Tanlay. Situated in north eastern France and ninety miles east of Paris, Champagne, by its very name, immediately tells us the most important claim to fame of this interesting and varied region. Though mainly an agricultural area with numerous vineyards, it is also crisscrossed by many rivers, the Seine, the Marne, the Aisne and the Meuse. The largest man- made lake in Europe Der Chantecoq is here and also many miles of canals. Where it borders Belgium Champagne contains part of the Ardennes with impressive forests, parks and valleys. Holidays in Franche Comte France This stunning and varied region is in eastern France where it borders Switzerland, sharing with its neighbour not only physical similarities but also similar culture, agriculture and cuisine. With the Vosges mountains in the south and the Jura in the north, dense pine forests, rolling cultivated fields, gorges, waterfalls and tiny villages, this is a destination for all seasons and every generation. Ski in winter, hike in summer, Franche Comte has the Doube and Loue Valley where timbered houses perch on stilts in the river , the Region des Lacs, the most wooded region in France and incredible views from Haute Jura over Lake Geneva and the Alps. Limousin is situated in the heartland of France 350 kilometers south of Paris. Crossed by many rivers; the Vienne, Dordogne, Cher and Creuse and with a very low population, this unspoiled region of France has a wonderfully tranquil landscape full of lakes, valleys, forests and mountains. Holidays in The Loire Valley France Situated in central France just, two hours south of Paris by car, the Loire valley is accessible by air from Tours. A UNESCO heritage site and one of the most popular destinations in France, yet unspoilt by mass tourism, the Loire Valley is exceptionally beautiful. The river Garonne rises in the Pyrenees and the Basque region crosses both France and Spain. Stunningly beautiful it is primarily a simple peasant region renowned for its folklore, folk theatre, music and dancing. Midi Pyrenees has a national park as well as three nature parks, limestone plateaux at Aubrac and the Causses mountains. It also has wonderful caves at Padirac and Ariege.
