Languedoc Roussillon Region
Situated in south central France, Languedoc Roussillon borders Spain, Andorra and the Mediterranean to the south and Provence to the east. To the north of the region are the foothills of the Pyrenees and the national park des Cevennes. With its miles of sandy beaches, valleys, mountains, gorges, caves and caverns this is a truly stunning region for the visitor to discover and enjoy.
Towns and Cities
The cosmopolitan town of Montpelier is the regional capital, there is also the southern city of Perpignan – perfect for wandering around. Also Nimes and Narbonne for their superb Roman ruins and the amazing city of Carcassonne with its medieval ramparts and architecture and nearby Cathar castles at Queribus and Peyrepertuse. For the seaside visit Marseillan, Balaruce-le-Vieux, Cap d’Agade and the quirky 1970’s resort of La Grand Motte. On the coast going toward Spain there are many little coves and fishing villages such as Collioure, Argeles sur Mer, Port Vendres and Banyuls sur Mer.
Activities
There are winter sports such as skiing and snow shoeing in the Pyrenees, but with about 300 days of sunshine a year there is no shortage of activities for everyone at all times. There are an outstanding array of water based activities including boating and fishing as well as walking, horse riding, golf and incredible caves to explore. For those wanting a more relaxed approach try a reviving thermal bath or look out for some of the local crafts such as glass making, basket weaving, pottery and silk making. Languedoc Roussillon also has many carnivals and festivals for the visitor to enjoy.
Food and Drink
There are over 700,000 acres of vinyards in this region which has been producing wine for centuries and every type of wine; red, white, rose and sparkling. For example Grenache, Syrah, Corbieres and Minervois. Regional produce include wonderful seafood, oysters mussels and whelks as well as olive oil, olives, sweet onions and Camargue beef. The cheese is fabulous with goats milk cheese a speciality; try Bleu de Causses if you like a good blue cheese. For local dishes there are Cassoulets containing beans, pork, bacon and duck, Aligot, a puree of potatoes cheese and garlic and for desert Crème Catalan.
Climate
Hot dry summers and rainy winters, the average annual temperature is 13.5 – 15 centigrade.
